St Peter's Church Burnley has a sundial "constructed" by Mr Whyman of Gawthorp. dated 1791. I know that there was a stone quarry near Gawthorpe Hall which may have produced the stone for this sundial. The word "constructed" may mean "manufactured" or "designed". Which brings me to the question... Was Mr Whyman from Gawthorp Padiham or Gawthorpe Yorkshire? Any ideas.

I'll have a look on the newspaper archive at the weekend to see if there is a write up about it.

While I cannot find an exact reference to the sundial and its origins, I have found mention of the Whyman name in the Announcements columns of the 1830's. The two references I found said 'of Gawthorp Hall'.

Thank you Mel. Designing a sundial to display a reasonably accurate time is far more complicated than one would first imagine. Although I suspect a hour here or there didn't matter too much for St Peter's late arrivals. I will follow up your lead. Thanks again.

A quick follow up. Thomas Whyman was steward to Robert Shuttleworth (1743-1816) of Barton and Gawthorpe. He also rented land from Gawthorpe during this period. Robert Shuttleworth also had family links back into Yorkshire. Round and round we go. I think I will leave it at this point.

The fun about this family history stuff is that the further you go round in circles, the more chance you have of disappearing up your own ????

I don't think that "Peek into the Past" means an examination of parts of the anatomy as a means of searching family history. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) the satirist author covered this point in "Gulliver's Travels" in the section "Laputa" where scientist could determine peoples thoughts from their waste matter. (not many people know that!)
