I lived on Church St from approx 1944 to 1950. I remember warm summer evenings and having to go to bed very early, long before it got dark. Several things stick in my memory from those years.
Having measles and feeling quite ill (of course).
There were crows/rooks roosting in the tall trees across the road in the church yard. They were very noisy and everyone agreed that they were a nuisance. One evening, the fathers got together with long poles which had flammable material on the end. They set fire to the pole ends and burnt the birds nests! This would be frowned on today, but then there weren't so many state nannies and communities could agree how to deal with a problem themselves.
I can remember being in a push chair and visiting the bakers on the corner of Church St and Queen St. The smell of newly baked bread was magnificent. While being pushed back home, I used to break off the crusts of the loaves and eat them. It disfigured the loaves, but I can't remember ever being told to stop!
Finally I remember going, again in a push chair, to the bottom of Church St and I think turning left. This lead to an allotment/smallholding area and we went to feed the ducks. Funny how smells are remembered when other things aren't. I distinctly remember the smell of bread dipped in milk and feeding that to the ducks.
