The Society has very kindly been gifted a small book titled "Tacklers' Yarns". It is currently in my possession but will be passsed to the Committee for the Society collection. I plan to post the various tales from it here.

It says 'Collected and Edited by Owd Shuttle' and the preface says it is tales from around Lancashire.

Broth

A tackler arriving home at the finish of his day's work sniffed a very savoury smell.
"Eh lass," he said, "that smells good; by gum it does anaw."
The wife replied, "Wilt go across to greengrocers and get a swede to put in it."
"I will that, lass, aw'll go neaw."
Arriving at the greengrocers, he was told that there were none in the shop, but if he cared to go the field at the back he could get one for himself.
"Wha' size shall I geet?" he remarked to the greengrocer, "wife's geet a big pan on."
"Oh! geet one abeaut size of thi yed."
Shortly afterwards a neighbour walked in the shop and said "what's tha' loo' doin' in yon fielt, diggin aw thi swde turnips up and trying his hat on every one o' them?"

Capacity

"Tum o' Bobs," as he was locally known, was a good tackler but a good supporter of the local publican. One day he had a brain wave. He determined, instead of paying fourpence a glass for his beer, to buy a nine-gallon barrel from a rival brewery. The drayman duly delivered the goods, made all ready for drawing, and, as he was leaving, remarked, "About when shall I call for the empty barrel."
"Tum o' Bobs" studied a bit and remarked, "Wheer are ta goin' neaw?"
"Ashton and Stalybridge, about a two hours journey."
"Tum o' Bobs" - "Oh! that's o' reet, tha can pick th' empty up on thi way back!"

Bunkered

An Oldham tackler was one of those rare individuals who had never seen an Association football match. Hearing the conversations during the mid-day "camp" regarding the big wages paid to professional players, he determined to see a game. Accordingly the following Saturday, along with a brother tackler, he paid a visit to a first league match. The half-time arrived with the home team leading 3-0. Then for the first time he made a remark:
"What's thad chap's job? (pointing to the visiting goalkeeper).
"Keepin footba' fro' goin in' t'net."
"And heaw much does ta say he geets a week?"
"Abeaut eight quid."
"Cum on whoam. I'd find a joiner i' Owdham as wud board them goal-posts up for thirty bob!"

Else they could sign up a decent goalie.

Enough Said

Two tacklers were taking a bathe at Blackpool. When they entered the water one said to the other:
"I'll tell thi waf, Bill, tha didn'd hawve want a weysh."
"Did I," remarked Bill, looking unconcernedly at his grimy body. "But dornd forget I'm three year owder ner thee!"
