The Post Office still take on some extras at Xmas, but not as many as 50+ years ago. When I was in the grammar school sixth form, it seemed that we nearly all did it. In my first year, I think, I had a round up Syke, including Oaken Bank and the Saxifield farms, Cop Row, and terraced streets on the right hand side behind the main road, looking up towards Haggate. From the sorting office in Burnley, we all took buses, no bikes (which is just as well as I have still never ridden one). One of the best things about the work was that the bags got lighter as the round progressed. Better though was breaking the journey back at a teashop at the top of Barden Lane ! A few years later I got seriously into family history, and found that my ancestors and other relatives lived in a good half of the Cop Row houses, about 120 years or so before then. By the way, those cottages are now 200 years old. They deserve a celebration next year say. Any ideas anyone ? Rex |

I wonder if the locals have realised the 200 year anniversary? An email to Roger perhaps? I've often thought, when driving up to Briercliffe from Burnley, how steep the hill seems and being thankful I'm not walking it! |
