So girls, are we all dutiful little wives?

Taken from Housekeeping Monthly, 13 May, 1955!


* Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting
him know that you have be thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.
* Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.
* Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.
* Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dustcloth over the tables.
* During the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering to his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.
* Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.
* Be happy to see him.
* Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.
* Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.
* Don't greet him with complaints and problems.
* Don't complain if he's late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through at work.
* Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or lie him down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.
* Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.
* Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.
* A good wife always knows her place.

Sounds like a 'Stepford Wife' wrote that, cant believe they swallowed all that twaddle in 1955, Dont remember me Mum carrying on like that with me Dad.

Neither do I Stephanie, but I remember my Nanny acting like that with my Grandad, the world stopped when he arrived home. Sad as it may sound, I can never remember him speaking to me.

Oh Gloria, that is so sad, my Grandad was very child orientated and sooo funny, I loved him to bits, I was only 7 when he died, he was 83, but I have a lot of happy memories of him and my Gran, they had, had, 9 children perhaps that was why he was so gregarious and comfortable around 'littlies'.

In today's terms:
Make sure you've put some beer in the fridge
Clear away all your treeing stuff before he gets in
Set the Sky+ box for any football match (however obscure the teams) that may have been n while he was at work.
Rush home from work to get his curry ready before he gets in.
Don't forget to place the remote control on the arm of his chair, and his paper, glasses and anything else he might want within easy reach. That way he won't have to leave the chair again till bedtime.

I think I am guilty of doing a couple of these in anticipation of Lyndons return from Vegas this week....

I recorded lots of programs but no sport - he doesn't do footy, he's a rugby man.
I placed clean ashtrays where he would need them
I did a light meal as his body clock is screwed up, we had ham and cheese croissants for tea. (Mealtimes is more often my department though he does cook occasionally, mostly at weekends.)

In my defence, he had just got off an 11 hour flight, had a 3 drive home and he had been away for a week and I missed him!

I promise normal service will resume

Sadly I'm not entirely joking. But he does do all the washing up and the cleaning so I guess it's worth enduring all that football. The remote control is a whole other issue that I guess we could devote a complete topic to . . .

We have bypassed the remote issue. Obviously we each have programs that are of no interest to the other. TV and box in spare room if it has to be watched or gets recorded for later.

We are complete opposites in that I am a morning person and he has a night owl. I watch my recordings in a morning while he is still dozing and he watches his after I go to sleep. It works for us.
