While looking through the Extwistle census extracts, I came across this good example of how people in the past have used their skills and resourcefulness to help make ends meet. In 1861, living at Haggate, Samuel Whitaker, aged 37, was a labourer and his wife Sarah had no given occupation. In 1871, Samuel's occupation was quarryman and Sarah's, 'baker oatcake'. In 1881, Samuel, aged 58, is described as 'grocer and quarryman' whereas Sarah, aged 55, seems to have been able to retire and is now simply 'wife'. Sadly, by 1891 Samuel has died. Sarah, aged 66, is now listed as head of household, widow - and grocer. Ruth |
