I thought people might be amused by this Ancestry entry for the 1871 census.

The name as transcribed on Ancestry is: Annie Clath Hall Holt.

I like to think that this represents the survival of a nickname, rather than or just an oddity on the census return page (Colne 1871, district 32, page 27)

The household for Thomas Holt, aged 24, described as whitesmith and hall keeper, is the seventh of nine households with the address of Cloth Hall. The only other person in the household is his wife, Annie, aged 19, described only as wife. In neat writing above Annie's name are the words 'Cloth Hall'.

It does make you wonder what our ancestors were known as locally doesn't it.

Doing my daughter-in-law's tree, I started with info from her father. He said that one of his great-uncles had been known locally as 'Jack of Hearts'. I pictured a him as quite an adonis with all the local lasses falling at his feet.
As the tree filled up I discovered that his father was called Hartley, so really he was 'Jack of Hart's', so as not to be confused with his cousin Jack, known as Jack o'Bella becasuse his mother was Isabella. Not nearly so glamorous :(
I love stuff like this, adding bits of family lore to names on the tree.
