Just found a good name:

Garibaldi Pickles, born Ingleton c. 1864 , a carrier living in Barnoldwick in 1911.

I wonder how they came up with that name? Names passed down through families or surnames used as first names are all quite common and easy to understand but I often wonder about names that appear to spring from nowhere.

I wonder what future generations will make of the names used today? Are they any worse than some of the names we find from years ago?

Looking again at Garibaldi Pickles's d.o.b (1864), I realise that he was born quite soon after the Unification of Italy (1861), in which his more famous namesake, Giuseppe Garibaldi, played a major role. Presumably the popular struggle in Italy was reported on at length in the English newspapers at the time.

Much better than being named after a biscuit!
