Using a family surname as a first name was common enough. However I have two examples in my WATSON family of the first name being Watson, namely my grandfather's brother and my great-grandfather's brother. Both died young.........

There was some correspondence about this some years ago in the columns of the Journal of the Guild of One-name studies (Goons !)

There are several instances of Doctor Pickup in the Rossendale Valley area. Those so baptised were not medical men so I don't know where the "doctor" originated. I have seen also Pickup Pickup when researching my Pickup line Rossendale.

Just been having a browse on the Goons site. There is some good information on Halstead Halstead,s. They all seem to originate in the Burnley area. Also a useful contact on the site of a lady who specialises in the Halstead name.

I have a great aunt who married an Arrandale Arrandale

I think I have read somewhere that the seventh son of a seventh son was given the name of Doctor..

Interestong Maggie. I have a Docter Sutcliffe in my file who shows as a 6th son but he could be 7th as I have rather a large gap between 5th and 6th, enough for a couple of kids to have been born and not survived.

Not sure about the dad though. I haven't tied him in to parents so can't say what number child he is yet.

Whilst I was trawling through the census for Padiham yesterday I came across an Admiral Moorhouse (occupation photographer) and General Whitehead (clogger).

I also noticed a quite touching entry for one adress which, instead of the name, said "not at home - gone to see her son".

There were several instances of Hartley Hartley in Colne

And I have also come across Parker Parker, Spencer Spencer, Smith Smith, Sagar Sagar but I think the poor lad I was at school with Lawrence Lawrence Lawrence was particularly badly done by.

Incidentally the 7th son of a 7th son being given the name Doctor is reported infollore of britain as a Blackburn tradition.

I found a Doctor Council Stuttard birth registered there which perplexed me as he was not a doctor nor anything to do with the council nor were any of his family but he also had 7 sons and named his 7th similarly. It was then that I discovered his grandmother's surname was Counsell - a common surname in those parts and his middle name was mis-spelt. It was some time later I found out the local tradition.

My grandfather, who lived in Lane Bottom for many years, was Spendlove Mills, better known as 'Spen'.

Mike - I do believe we have a common ancestor!

Would I be right in thinking Spendlove Mills' father was Sander Davis mills? there can't be two people in that era with that name can there?
