BACK TER MILL

Ahm known as Th'Owd Syker
because ah come frae Syke.
The nicest place in all the world,
yer can call it what yer like.

Ah started work when ah left school
on looms at Queen St mill.
ah nobbut woorve fer that one day,
it really made me ill.

Ah made a smash, ah fergeet missel,
ah put two shuttles in,
yer should hev herd em when they crashed,
they made an awful din.

When tackler coom, he looked at me,
then said withairt a dairt,
that's the biggest smash ah've ever sin,
ahs hev ter cut it airt.

But first of all thar'll come wi me,
Sooer get thi coyt an cap,
we'll hev ter see the manager,
an tell him oer this trap.

When tackler towled him what ah'd done,
he said "God rest my soul,
thard better get thi cards mi lad,
an sign on at the dole".

Then after a minute's thowt he said,
"Ah'd better see thi dad,
ah thinks thers a job ter let upstairs,
we want a wairhairse lad".

Mi dad said "ay, he'll teck the job,
it'll find him summat ter do",
and boss said, "get that bucket an brush,
tha can start an clearn the lu".

In every department o'that mill,
ah seemed ter get a job,
an biggest wage I ever geet,
were less ner fifty bob.

That wern't enough ter live on,
an help to pay mi debts,
sooer ah geet a pitch at Burnley Dogs,
an started tecking bets.

Th'Owd Syker.

They take me ages, not very fast typing but the language makes it worse. I will save the longer ones for later, there are hundreds of the d*** things
How did you get those on from your camera, did you just download them onto the computer then copy and paste????

One of the newspaper articles (the one I am in the process of transcribing) talks about the dog racing and says Towneley.

Gloria, I'm afraid I still have to physically transcribe the articles and yes, they rend to take a while. Especially the ones with the dialect. The camera just makes it easier than scanning when the articles are larger than A4.

No sorry...I do it exactly the same way as you. Time consuming but great stuff for the site.

Don't tell Lyndon, he thinks I am slaving away half the time when he hears the keyboard rattling!!
