MOOR MEMORIES O'T SYKE
Ther's a lot o'things ah remember I'Syke,
an' ahm bairn try an' tell yer a few,
some of ter may think at ahve med em all up,
ah con assure yer, every one on em's true.
Ah'll start off wi' Jack Tatt, th'owd cobbler,
weer ah first geet mi button up boots,
Johnny Weston's tailor's shop, Dawson City,
weer a lot o' chaps geet ther new suits.
Some on yer weernt remember this place,
soor in case yer might want ter check,
Dawson City wer a reyt big wood hoil,
tween Jackwell 'airse and bottom o' th' reck.
Another landmark, Dan Halstead's corner shop,
weer woodbines wer five fer just a penny,
he'd football cards, luck bags an' turnovers,
ah cairnt name 'em all ther were soor many.
Mi dad hed a chip hoil a bit further up,
he ran a football tearm call Kippax Eleven,
they won Burnley Amateur League Championship,
in abairt nineteen o' six or seven.
John Tommy Latham wer next door ter mi dad,
his business wer hard ter discribe,
it were a cross between herbalist and chemist,
he wernt qualified to prescribe.
He sowld flagroot, we bowt it ter stop smooking,
it hed a taste like nothing else on earth,
if only it hed done what we bowt it for,
ther were noor telllin air much it wer worth.
Amos Mason's fruit shop were next door to him,
they had twins born same day as me,
we all started gooing ter school on same day,
Annie and Alfred and me.
Next door Uncle Jess hed a tripe shop,
he opened it as a pey hoil at neet,
Maggie Shack took it o'er a bit latter on,
the boiled ham at she sowld were a treat.
Last callin gshop fer sweets on way ter school,
wer Owld Luke's at top o' same row,
fer kali suckers, toffee fags, an' spenish braid,
an' lots of other soorts yer all owt ter know.
Ahm bairn and this tale wi' a question,
which might cause a bit of a stir,
ther wer some toffee we called boggard muck,
