JUBILEE DAY AT SYKE

Ther wer a picture o' Queen i mi paper,
axing foorks "Are you enjoying yourself",
well ah wet up Syke fer Jubilee Day,
abairt the fun at ah hed ahm bairn tell.

When ah went onter reck that morning,
ah sed, "Good heavens, they've brocken every rule,
drawn up bi th'owd Parish Council,
an taichings o'th Aggate sunday school".

If they'd a come back ter life that morning,
would they have agreed, would they heck,
they daren't do owt like that up at Syke,
selling intoxicating liquors on't reck.

John Stewart an his hard working committee,
deserve nowt only th'ighest o' praise,
childer'll remember this day all ther life,
like ah've doen o' my boyhood days.

They put on such a marvellous show,
the finest at village ad seen,
it wer Sykers moorst wonderful day of days,
to honour their most Gracious Queen.

One o't Committee wer glad ter see me,
but before he sould day onny moor,
he were axed ter goor ter ladies latrine,
cos bucket wer full an running all o'er.

Fer him ter do a job like this,
ter believe it, it hed ter be seen,
ah just couldn't imagine this pal o' mine,
being in charge of the ladies latrine.

Ah wer tawkinter one lass near th'ale tent,
she sed, "that's mi lad stood ower theer",
then she suddenly sed to his fayther,
"Look Dad thi sons supping beer".

One chap at ah met, knew ah once med a boook,
sed, "Ah med nowt a thy job thar knows,
ah never gammed a a'penney in all mi life,
but ah were a wastrel laking at toes".

Another chap sed, "Does ta remember this pitch?",
ah sighed an sadly looked up,
cos he knew what ah knew, that ahd missed a goal,
when Queen Street geet knocked aairt o' cup.

A pal o' mine went hooam much worse for weer,
lost his key, and poor lad were locked out,
but his wife hed pity as she dragged him inside,
saying, "Come in, thart better na nowt".

Ah've towled yer the funny side o' that day,
but they nearly browt tears ter mi eyes,
they'd noor idea air honoured ah wer,
when ah wer axed ter present fell runners prize

Th'Owd Syker

Wonderfu! My dad laughed his head off...I think at the content, not my attempt at dialect! My husband on the other hand shakes his head in disbelief!
Thank you for sharing these gems!
