As far as I know there's no requirement to have a headstone at all so I suppose anything you put on it after that's a matter of personal choice

I agree Maureen. I've noticed that there seem to be more restrictions here in Staffs than up there. There are guidelines as to what would constitute as a suitable memorial. I've seen home made wooden crosses as well as slate that has the detail painted on it. Neither are allowed here.

I guess some of what goes on a gravestone comes down to cost. Don't the Monumental Masons charge by the letter?
