Yesterday I stumbled on an article that I believe relates to my ancestor dated Dec 1870 where "single woman, appeared to affiliate a bastard child on...", the accused being my 4x gt grandfather. "In consequence of an informality in the summons, the case was dismissed."

Does anyone know if any records might exist that I could view or where I might find them? I have emailed the LRO but it could be days before I hear anything and I'm impatient   :D

LRO would have been my first point of call. Have you tried putting the names into A2A database?

No, not yet but I have found the single woman in the workhouse in 1871 with her 1 year old son who she named after my ancestor! I wonder if it was the workhouse who forced her to pursue the matter...they didn't like to financially support people if someone else could be found to foot the bill did they. (What a shame these methods are not used today  )
The bit I failed to point out is that my ancestor was 88 at the time of the summons! He died a month later - did this put the nail in the coffin?

One of my lot fathered a child at the age of 83 but at least he did have the grace to marry her first. she was 46 years younger than him. I don't get it :?

She must have been after his money, or was absolutely destitiute and he offered her a home.

Definitely not the money! But her mother was aged, her father was dead, so I guess a bit of security. That said he wasn't going to live long and she ended up widowed with a small child. Tough times in 1860s Cornwall.
