Was Trawden in Yorkshire in 1841?

I have been tracing back a Robert Banks who was aged 26 in 1851 and gives his place of birth as Trawden but he doesn't appear on their church register???

Not 100% sure Hannah, but everywhere I look for him it gives his birth as Trawden, Lancashire---never once mentions Yorkshire. Nothing to have stopped them going over the border for a christening though, it is quite near Yorkshire.

Thanks anyway Gloria, I have had a delayed lightbulb moment though :) Just because he said on the census he was born in Trawden means nothing. I was right, there is a record of his baptism at the church in Haggate on 7th June 1824 and it has given me his parents names, so I'm now trying to decide whether the St Peters records who have the same surname from Briercliffe in early 1700 or do I check St Barts to see if they moved over the hill to get married???

I have tried to give up this habit of people hunting :cry: but it's like chocolate.

Better than chocolate - doesn't make you fat & doesn't rot your teeth. Plus you can share it and still have the same amount left :D

Trawden certainly never in Yorks !

People from quite a wide area could have their births (not baptism) recorded at Haggate Baptist, when the parents were of the Baptist persuasion ; there was also the Baptist church at Colne though. So the information that Robert was born Trawden is probably accurate. However in the census reurns (from 1851) birthplace is usually the 'township', or similar. The Forest of Trawden, extended over quite an area, largely rural. Some of this area would have been away towards Haggate from Trawden village.

Trawden was in the chapelry of Colne, making that the likely place in earlier times for Anglican baptisms (and marriages/burials), if indeed the family lived then in Traden Forest.

St Mary's Trawden was not built until 1846 - so C of E babies would be baptised elsewhere before that.

St James Briercliffe was built 1839-41 (Wikipedia). The earliest baptismal and burial records are for 1841, the first marriage records are for 1843 (Lancashire online parish clerks),

Haggate Baptist Chapel was built pre 1771.

Haggate built 1767 to be precise ! (See my booklet)

Birth records start about then, burial from c 1786.
