Last May I copied some articles from the Times, dated November 1841 http://briercliffesociety.co.uk/talkbac ... c&start=15 The articles basically tell the story of how Lieutenant O’Grady and Isabella Terrett (nee. Hadden, daughter of John Hadden, the mess-master of the barracks) were murdered by Robert Morris. I would like to know where these people are buried, any ideas? Did soldiers have a special place of burial in Burnley? |

In answer to your question, I think I have found the answer. In a book I have on East Lancashire murders it tells of this murder in Burnley in 1841, it is called The Barracks Murder. It says that the remains of the unfortunate Isabella were buried in the graveyard at St. Peter's Church, the committal service being witnessed by a large crowd of onlookers, and late at night on the same Wednesday the body of Pte. Morris was interred in Holy Trinity Church's graveyard in complete secrecy, without even the benefit of a prayer. On the following Saturday, accompanied by all the pomp and ceremony of a full military funeral, a large crowd witnessed an impressive service at Holy Trinity for the late Lt. O'Grady, whose body was later transferred to a large wooden crate and conveyed to Limerick in Ireland to be placed in the family vault. It must have been a tragic period for the O'Grady family, for the Lt's younger brother had died only a short time earlier as a result of a duel. There is more to the story, and there was even a poem written about the tragedy, copies of which were printed and sold throughout a wide area of the north of England. Best Wishes. Burnleymasher. |

Burnleymasher just mailed me the following: I have had a look at St Peters Churchyard for Isabella Terrett, the grave is listed as Vol. E Entry No. 1125. Isabella Terrett. Date 18th Nov 1841. Abode: Barracks, Habergham Eaves. Minister JB. There was no MI listed |

“When only 16 years of age she (Isabella Hadden) married a man named Patrick Territt, a private in the 97th Regiment, then stationed at Burnley-barracks. She had for four or five years lived separate form her husband, who we believe, is now with his regiment in Malta or Corfu” 97th (Earl of Ulster's) Regiment of Foot 1795 - 1854 One 97th regiment served in Bermuda, the West Indies, and America, including the expedition to Plattsburg in 1814. It was disbanded in 1818. A new 97th went abroad in 1841, and served in Gibraltar, in the Ionian Islands, Jamaica, and in North America until 1853, when it came home.
