I've never made a crumble in my life but today I bought some rhubarb with the intention of making one.

Anyone got a tried and tested recipe as opposed to one pulled off the internet please?

Depending on your size of dish the crumble mix is
1 part butter
1 part sugar
2 parts flour

I use 8oz flour, 4oz sugar, 4oz butter for a 9ins shallow dish.

butter and flour into the mixer, mix to breadcrumbs, stir in sugar.
Lightly butter dish, add chopped rhubarb, add sugar to sweeten. Spoon on crumble mix, press down gently.
Into oven 30-40mins at 215c'ish but better lower than higher, until golden brown, and rhubarb cooked.

Enjoy

Thanks Gloria. I think I have far too much rhubarb but it looked lovely. I'll make this tomorrow as a treat for imindoors. He likes something sweet after a meal.

His maj says if you've any spare rhubarb gloria he'll gladly take some off you for a crumble (being as I allegedly destroyed his rhubarb plant).
Meanwhile, does anyone know when gooseberries are in season. I have a fantastic recipe for gooseberry shortcake but haven't seen any for 2-3 years (not even frozen)

The crumble was excellent, I added cinnamon to the fruit. I can't believe I have never made such a simple dish before!

We have guests for dinner tonight so I think I may make this for dessert.

Apparently gooseberrys are in season in June, according to www.bbc.co.uk/food/in/season

I've made crumble with plums, and in Ontario peach crumble is very popular in August and September. Absolutely scrumptious.

A posher alternative for apple crumble is to add an oz of grated cheddar to the topping. Doesn't go to well with custard but good with cream or ice cream.
