Back on the menu, the spuds that saw us through the war

This is good to see. I am not a huge fan of potato these days - I think they are tasteless and many don't hold well through boiling.
I've recently been buying Asda's basics brand of potato. They seem to be just a bog standard dirty potato but definitely have some taste in them unlike the washed ones that are on offer in most supermarkets. Cheap as chips too
You don't very often see a dirty potato these days. When I was a girl  all potatoes were dirty.

I remember dirty potatoes too Mel, when me Mum used to shop (pre supermarket days) they used to empty all your fruit and veg in your bag/basket, nowt was wrapped. Nothing seems to have a lot of taste today that you get from the supermarkets! think it's because it is all forced fruit and veg, I try to get stuff off the market if I can. I've bought fruit from the supermarket not quite ripe enough to eat and before it is ripe it's started to go bad  and I've had to chuck it away!!
I remember me Mum telling me that during rationing she was queing one day at the fruit and veg shop and when it was her turn she had quite a bit of stuff going into her bag as she was shopping for all the family, there was a little old lady also being served stood next to me Mum, she asked the bloke serving her for 1 potatoe, 1 carrot and 1 onion, the guy was quite short tempered with the old lady and told her he wasn't serving her with just that small amount! Me Mum asked him if he was refusing to serve her (the little old lady) and when he said he was, she turned her full bag upside down on his counter and told him he could have this lot back then, there was fruit and veg going all over the place  the shop was in an uproar, a very pricipled lady my Mum, good on her I say.
