There are these marriages in 1875 in Burnley, but they would have been 45'ish then which is a bit old to get married. There are a few at earlier dates for Robert but none with a Susannah on the same page.
James Atkinson 1875 Oct-Nov-Dec Burnley Lancashire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Robert Kippax 1875 Oct-Nov-Dec Burnley Lancashire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Susannah Smith 1875 Oct-Nov-Dec Burnley Lancashire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Mary Stanworth 1875 Oct-Nov-Dec Burnley Lancashire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Joseph Bush Watson 1875 Oct-Nov-Dec Rochdale Greater Manchester, Lancashire

Robert Kippax (1st wife) Ann Nutter married 1850 Burnley. Ann died March 1/4 1875 vol 8e page 194. According to the Free BMD site she was 41 but the Lancashire BMDs site say 44. There was an Ann Nutter baptised 2 July 1832 d/o John and Mary in Burnley.(LDS).

Thanks for your swift replies, I should have added that Susannah is listed in the 1881 census as being born in Lancaster.
So far I have not been able to verify this. I really don't think any of the possibilities quoted in your replies is the correct one for my family. My father said that there were at least five different branches of the Kippax tree at school with him. Unfortunately I cannot check with him now, since he is dead. Evidence of this is well documented elsewhere on this website (i.e. Haggate)
Thanks for you comments though.

Hi Gordon, I am surprised you are discounting the 1841 census I found, especially with the common names.
Where did your father go to school with 5 different branches of the Kippax family?

Hi Gloria,
My father was in school in Burnley. His name was Robert also, born in 1890. I have already found another Robert, born
very nearly the same time as my father, so he must have a point. Father's address was 4 Faibairn street, Burnley. From the 1881 census. His father was yet another James Kippax born 1867 who was married to Martha (I believe Smith - but as yet no proof).
James is listed in the 1881 census as a "book keeper". Later, he was in charge of a small engineering works, which failed in the depression. He later committed suicide as a result. Martha died in childbirth, a little before this, I believe, producing their seventh child.
I hope this helps.
Gordon
