Hi there, I am new to the Forum and this is my first message! I have an interest in the Surname of Crossdale...it was recorded as Croasdale in the early part of the 19th century, I am stuck at James Croasdale born circa 1770 and possibly married to Sally Greenwood on 5th September 1793 at St Peter's in Burnley. The family were living at Cocken on the 1841 census, I have no way of knowing where James was born, his age came from what was recorded on his death certificate which is not certain to be correct. |

Hi Joan, welcome to the site. I have just tried to find James in the 1841 census but I cannot find him-------how is his name spelt in that? Also, what year did he die? Gloria |

Thankyou for the welcome Gloria They are at the very bottom of the page and the name actually looks like Jane, but both ages are in the Male column. He is living with another James Crosdale who I believe is his Grandson. James died on 14th February 1846 and the age given on his death certificate is 76. He was buried at Haggate. I think he may have married Sally Greenwood, but apart from the marriage entry at St Peter's there is nothing else to connect them and I cannot find a burial for Sally. I have found a birth entry in the Haggate birth register for the younger James, he was born on 13th November 1813 at Fennymoor foot, his Mother was Betty Croasdale and his Father was Henry Watson....I know about the Father's name from both James's marriage certificates. 1841 census - household transcription Person: CROSDALE, James Address: Cockden, Whalley, Briercliffe With Entwistle CROSDALE, James* M 71 1770 Lancashire VIEW CROSDALE, James M 25 1816 Lancashire VIEW RG number: HO107 Piece: 506 Book/Folio: 15/6 Page: 4 Registration District: Burnley Union Sub District: Burnley EnumerationDistrict: Ecclesiastical Parish: Civil Parish: Whalley Municipal Borough: Address: Cockden, Whalley, Briercliffe With Entwistle County: Lancashire |

On IGI there is a Tom Croasdale born 21st Sept 1871, christened 22nd Oct 1871 Colne Lancashire with parents James Croasdale and Sarah. Struggling to find any other references to James or Sarah/Sally, I have tried both and various spellings of Croasdale. Will keep looking. Gloria |

There is every possibility that the family came from Colne, as I can't find any other Croasdale/Crossdale's in Burnley around the time of James's birth |

Thanks Kris, I must be going around with my eyes shut There appears to be only 9 dwellings in Cockden in 1841, I have had a look around and there are no more Croasdales to be found. There are 2 of my Brierleys with various spellings. It is an unusual name for Briercliffe, I can't think I have come across it there before. I have looked in Roger Frosts History of Briercliffe with Extwistle, Bennetts History of Burnley, and his History of Marsden and Nelson and can find no reference to Croasdale (any spelling). In Colne Parish Registers 1599-1653 there are the following references to Croisdall (Croysdale, Croysdall) Alicia fil' Ja : Croisdall de ffolridg 22nd Julij 1635--christening Laurenti' filius Johanis Croysdall de Barrowford eod die Dec 10th 1637--christening Robert' gervase et Alicia Croysdall eod die 28th Junij 1641--weddings Jacobus Croysdale de Blackow 15th March 1642--Burial |

I am intrigued by the burial of Betty Crosdale at Haggate on 22nd Feb 1791 at she was aged 27 years, I feel she must belong to me as there are no other Crossdale's/Croasdales in Briercliffe! |

Did you know there is a Croasdale Avenue at the top of Lanehead? You can find it on Multimap. |

I know about the other Crossdale burials, Elizabeth is my 3x Great Grandmother, Jane and Sarah were her children who died in Infancy, James Crossdale born c.1770, his Grandson James and his wife Lettice are also buried at Haggate. I am pretty sure that Betty will be related, she could be his 1st wife or maybe a sister! |
