This appears to be him & family in 1881:

John Leaver, head, marr, 32, farmer of 34 acres employing 2 labourers, born Burnley Lancs.
Nanny Leaver, wife, marr, 40, farmer's wife, born Burnley Lancs.
William Brown, son, unm, 21, sharebroker's clerk, born Burnley Lancs.
John Brown, son, unm, 18, farmer's son, born Burnley Lancs.
James Leaver, son, 7, scholar born Burnley Lancs.
Charles Leaver, son, 6, scholar, born Burnley Lancs.
Joseph Leaver, son, 5,scholar, born Burnley Lancs.

We have a John Leaver, son of John & Nancy, born 1849 but he was born Briercliffe so I haven't checked it out yet to see whether it was the same one.

According to Lancashire bmd, John Leaver married Nanny Brown in 1872. She died in 1886 and he remarried (to Clara Page ) in 1890.
Which still doesn't answer the question who his parents were. If I can't find it from the censuses I'll send for the marriage cert.

The parents of the John Leaver above appear to be James (1823-1890) & Elizabeth (1822-1882)

1851 Census – HO 107 / 2251 / 1
Houghtans, Extwistle, St. John
James Leaver, Head, Married, 27yrs, Gamekeeper, b. Lancs, Extwistle
Elizabeth Leaver, Wife, marr, 27yrs, b. Lancs, Extwistle
John Leaver, Son, 1yrs, b. Lancs, Extwistle
1861
RG9; Piece: 3074; Folio: 6; Page: 5
Extwistle Fold
James Leaver 37, head, marr, gamekeeper, b Marsden
Elizabeth Leaver 38, wife, marr, b Extwistle
John Leaver 11, son, scholar, b Extwistle
1871
RG10; Piece: 4148; Folio: 40; Page: 26
Heasandford
James Leavers 48, head, marr, gamekeeper, b Marsden
Elizabeth Leavers 49, wife, marr, gamekeeper's wife, b Briercliffe
John Leavers 21, son, unm, joiner, b Briercliffe

I have a suspicion that James was the son of John (1794-1871) and Ann Catlow. All their earlier children were born at Finsley, Little Marsden before the family moved to Extwistle Hall.

Elizabeth (1824) is probably Elizabeth Harrison (Lancashire Marriage index 1848 - Worsthorne, St John Evangelist, registers at Preston CE131/1/3).

Working on it.

I've now posted details of the James Leaver/ Elizabeth Harrison marriage in the marriages section.
I'm happy it confirms that this James was the son of John (1794-1871) as John also was a gamekeeper and living at Roggerham as the innkeeper in 1851.
