Court of Petty Sessions

The following cases came up for hearing on Monday last, before J. Heelis, T.W. Whittaker, J. Roberts, and R. Holding, Esqrs.:- George Crabtree was summoned for a breach of the Improvement Act, by Mr. Thomas Howard. -The charge was proved, and defendant fined 5s. and costs. - Trespass in Search of Game -G. Riley, Joseph Haughton, John Thistlethwaite and J. Tattersall, were brought up charged by Benjamin Dickenson with being found in search of game. The charge being proved they were fined 20s. and costs. - Peter Whittaker and John Waddington were brought up, charged with a similar offence. Whittaker was fined 15s. and costs. Whittaker in this case was committed for perjury, and Waddington was bound over to answer any similar charge, which might be brought against him. - John Hays, gamekeeper, preferred a charge against Henry Rostrain, of Hapton, and John Lancaster, of Padiham, with trespassing in search of game at Huncoat, and also for killing game without a certificate. The charges being proved, Rostran was fined 40s. and costs, and Lancaster 60s. and costs. - Rostran was formerly an assistant gamekeeper at Hapton.
The notorious Johnny Holden was again brought up before the magistrates on Monday, charged with threatening the relieving officer because he would not hand over, at his request, the sum of 2s. He was committed to prison for six weeks.
Felony - On Wednesday las, Ann Herbert was brought up, charged with stealing a looking glass and two brushes from the shop of Mr. W Bowes. She was sent to Lancaster Castle for three months.
