Saturday January 6 1844

Preston Epiphany Quarter Sessions

Thomas Hartley, 18 (imp), was charged with stealing, at Barrowford Booth, on the 22nd December, two hens, the property Matthew Leeming; and also two hens, the propert of Richard Proctor. The prisoner pleaded not guilty.
Matthew Leeming, witness: Saw the hens safe on the night preceeding the theft. soon after they were stlen. Met prisoner driving them. Asked him where he was going with them. Said he was going to drive them into a hole. Told him, if he did so, he would probably get into a hole himself. Took the hens from him. The hen-house was broken open.
James Fletcher, police-constable: Apprehended the prisoner. Hens here produced by witness. Leeming called in and indentified them.
Guilty. There were a number of other charges against the prisoner, besides former convictions. Sentence, seven years' transportation.

John Wilson, (not in calendar), charged with refusing maintenance of illegitimate child. six months' imprisonment to Lancaster Castle.

Patrick Grant, 19 (n.), was charged with stealing, at Habergham Eaves, on the 14th December, seventeen pounds weight of meal, one tea cannister, one tobacco box, and one quarter of an ounce of tobacco, the property of Ann Smith. guilty. Sentenced to two months' confinement in the House of Correction.

John Wilson, 30 (n.), was charged with stealing, at Burnley, on the 15th December, two watches, the property of Gratian Eugene Mc.Cabe. Guilty. Two months imprisonment in the House of Correction.
