Felony

John Heap, alias Steamer, and Thomas Hargreaves alias Tyler, were charged with having stolen a musical snuff-box, the property of Mr. James Sutcliffe, bookseller, Yorkshire-street, on the 8th inst. It appears that at about 5 or 6 o'clock on Saturday morning, the bolt had been removed and two of the shutters taken off from the window of the shop, and a pane of glass broken. Mr. Sutcliffe is in the habit of having a great number of watches exposed in the window for sale, and it is therefore probable that it was the watches the prisoners had calculated upon; if so, they were deceived, as Mr. Sutcliffe had taken them out of the window on the previous night. The musical snuff-box, however, being within their reach, was taken. On the night of the day on which the robbery was committed, the police received information that Steamer had been offering the box for sale for 2s. 6d. On the following (Sunday) night, the missing article was found at the shop of Mr. Rawlinson, pawnbroker. The box had been pledged by Hargreaves. Both Steamer and Hargreaves were taken into custody on the same night; and when brought before the Magistrates on the following morning, Hargreaves stated that he had found it under Sutcliffe's window. The Magistrates, not believing in this, committed them both for trial. Both prisoners are privates in the 3rd Royal Lancashire Militia.
