Alleged Fraud Upon The Excise

On Monday week, Henry Sagar, innkeeper, Colne, was charged by the officers of excise with an attempted evasion of the Post-horse Duty. The case had been postponed in order to allow Sagar to bring up witnesses to disprove the charge. Mr. W.F. Holroyde, of Halifax, was retained by the Board of Excise to conduct the case; and called evidence to prove that Sagar had let out a gig to an excise-officer of the name of Wyld, which gig was hired to go from Colne to Grassington, (22 miles) whereas the ticket which Sagar had made out only stated the hiring to be to Broughton, eight miles. This fact being proved, Sagar was convicted in £10 and costs.
