Illicit Distillery
John Chadwick was brought up charged with having been engaged in illegal distillation. The following are the facts of the case:- About nine o'clock on the evening of Sunday last, he was discovered by P.C. Summers, P.C. Fish, John Thornton, and James Waddington in a culvert near the canal, in Pendle Forest. There was found in the prisoner's possession a new still, which was a very large one, also a worm, condenser, and tubs containing a large quantity of wash - in fact, everything necessary for manufacturing a great quantity of spirits. The whole of the articles were brought to the Police-office. The prisoner had nothing to say for himself. The magistrates mulcted(?) him in the penalty of £30; or in default, to be committed to prison for three months.
