Jackwell, literally means ‘well on vacant land’, but the name could refer to the possibility that the land had been farmed for some time and then left unused for some time. This is an instance when a name has come from local dialect, for ‘jack’ is a northern word for ‘something not in use, lying fallow, unproductive’. We still use the word when making a resolution not to work as in ‘jacking it in’. I suppose that the name Jackwell could also refer to a useless or unreliable well.

Jackwell House is at the top of Tennyson Street. It was formerly a farm with land reaching to the River Don almost a mile away.

I'm interested in Jackwell House as my grt.grt. grandfather, his wife and children were resident at Jackwell house for a number of years ..

My grt.grandfather was James Halstead(2) - he left England in the 1890's with his new wife .. and went Canada where he farmed for a short while .. by the early 1900's james had had enough of the harsh Canadian weather and migrated to Victoria Australia ..
