WOODBINE, Woodbine Farm gave its name to the Woodbine Estate, and was located near the bottom of Dugdale Road. The farm was thought to have dated from the 1720-50’s, and attached to it as Woodbine Cottage. The farm, and the cottage was demolished around 1846 when the Woodbine Estate was begun. Woodbine, in this instance, is not a packet of fags; its wild honeysuckle with fragrant yellow flowers, which evidently must have grown in this area. In the 1870’s, Woodbine Farm was tenanted by Henry Campbell aged 45, a widower, who farmed the 68 acres here with the help of his 21 year old son, Thomas. Henry’s three daughters were also living at the farm at this time, Mary, Sarah, Ellen and Alice. |
