Can anyone help me? My grandma lives in Clay Farm, and her family have done since (as far as i've found) 1911 (i found her great great uncle listed on the 1911 census there). She told me about 3 brothers who lived in the large house next to her in clay cottage and they all died in WW1. I was researching them and thats when I found this site. It was the Nutter brothers. My guess is that my great grandad Jim who worked the farm then would have known them. My grandad who died last year always wanted to take some soil from clay to their graves so they had a piece of home, but he never got round to it before he passed. Does anyone have any info re clay farm previous to 1911? I would love to hear from you! Thanks Lauren |

Welcome to the forum Lauren. Are you having a senile moment Gloria....I'm sure your worse half has heard of it.... I think Roger said at the last meeting that Clay Cottage (or was it on the walk....did we see it on the walk?) is just over the boundary but it's the one where the Nutter brothers lived....the 4 that were killed in the war. http://briercliffesociety.co.uk/Soldier ... I don't recall...I just seem to remember W and Roger being in discussion. Am I getting confused with Scarrs Farm...the Nutters lived there also? |

Hi, Its on Edge End Avenue. The Nutter brothers lived in the large house (clay cottage) next door to clay farm. They will have lived there when my great grandad was running the farm. My gran is really interested in it. Just thought i'd see what I could find out! Lauren |

Ah yes it's not in Briercliffe but quite near. What exactly would she like to know? It would be possible to go back through the censuses I suppose. I have looked in the History of Marsden and Nelson and haven't found reference to it as yet. Will keep looking. |
