Was originally called 'Twostoops'. Does anyone know why? I have checked Roger's book but can't find a reason.

Isn't a stoop a Lancashire word for stile, so twostoops meaning two stiles near each other. If not a stile then a narrow gateway. Pretty sure that is it.

I know Roger told us at the slide show last month but my memory is like a sieve. It's because I'm approaching 40! (In 6 years!)

LOl, I knew what you meant!

From David Barker.

Taken From A LANCASHIRE DIALECT

Steelhole – a stile
Steyl – a handle, ‘A brush steyl’
Stir, stur – festivity, an exciting event ‘Next singin’ stur’
Ston, stonds – stands ‘It stonds upon a hilly ridge’
Stoop – a post ‘A gate stoop’
Stowed – stopped. When a horse refuses to go it is said to be stowing
Stracklin – a rough, careless fool
Strap – credit ‘He’d noather strap nor brass for t’ pay’
Stretch – a period of time, a distance
Stroddlin – standing with the legs wide apart
Sturred

SO TWO STOOPS TWO GATEPOSTS

Never heard of stowed or stracklin.
My grandad used to write lancashire dialect poetry under the guise of Th'owd Syker. He had a few small books published and used to write regularly in the Burnley Express on various aspects of Briercliffe. I have all his old scribblings somewhere.

I remember Th'owd Syker writing for the Burnley Express. I do hope you put some of his work on this web site for us Gloria. Best wishes Pollyanna

I now have a few of Th'owd Syker articles. I am working towards them appearing on the site.
