The guy that I bought Proctor Cote House from was called Bert Morris,Bert converted and extended what were the two original cottages.Bert also converted and modernised the property across the road and he moved in there when I moved in. Yes Bert had a daughter who rode horses and I believe that when Bert passed away that daughter and her husband moved into the property and have stabling etc there .
It must be 25 years ago at least when I bought Proctor Cote and I lived there for about 6 years.
Our nearest neighbours apart from Bert, his wife Jacqui and the ghosts up at Extwistle, were Alan Starkie and his wife from the farm behind who delivered our milk.
According to our local sage Mr Frost Proctor Cote was indeed two cottages originally and part of the premises was originally a small shop.Roger says he remembers it from when he was a small boy. I cannot imagine it doing a lot of trade in that location, unless it was a tea shop and catered for walkers.
Roger told me that he has written a History of Shops and Shopping in Briercliffe which he is going to word process when he gets back onto his PC.
Regards
David

Bert Morris, that was his name. I remember them having horses across the road. I think the buildings were converted after we left the area. We also knew Alan and Nora at Lea Green.
Do you know who owns Extwistle now?

I think there was an article somewhere on the net a few years ago (in the late 90's?) saying someone had bought it and applied for planning permission to do something with it. Don't know if it was approved or not but obviously nothing has ever happened.
Roger may know?
He did mention this at one of the meetings...I think the first one I went to.

I honestly do not know now, when I lived at Proctor Cote a guy who I think lived over Haslingden way bought the place. He never seemed to do anything with it and there were all sorts of rumours flying around that it was going to be tuirned into a country club with golf course and things but nothing ever came of it.
Now you have got me started I will ask around some of the local farmers etc up at the pub, they usually know about these things.

David

I think you are probably right Portia, but that will only be for tax reasons.

You may say that, David, but I couldn't possibly comment. (In my murky past I was a tax inspector)

Too right Mel! Well, that is, I don't go there any more and they pay me not to go. And yes, I've heard all the comments about civil servants nad their pensions.
As for retired, it doesn't feel like it.
