My mum agrees that the Walverden Road shop was run by the Frear family. She also remembers a shop at Holt Hill - the end house coming towards Lane Bottom. Also two shops on Granville Strret both on the bottom blocks practically facing each other. One a toffee shop (I remember that!) and opposite a lady who sold wool. She also recalls a large shop called Drivers on the corner of Queen St and Church St. There was a shop on Townley Street just above where the doctors surgery once was and many many more. I remember the two shops at Haggate.

David I think the fire damaged the back of the school if you are looking at it from Burnley Road.

Thanks for that Pollyanna.Roger Frost told me recently that he has written a history of "Shops and Shopping in Briercliffe" which he says that he is going to get on a word processor (his words lol) as soon as he is well enough to get back on a pc.
It is interesting when you walk or drive through Harle Syke to look at the buildings that are now domestic dwellings but have obviously been shops in a previous era.
It is very difficult with stone built properties to disguise blocked up doorways and large windows, because they leave the stone lintels in and just fill in the openings with stone if you get my drift
There are lots of properties like this on Burnley Road and some of the side streets.

David, he will have written it on his word processor. He can't use a computer because of his migraines.
It is one of the books he told me he hopes will be out this year. I hope he has more success with the publishing side of things. His Peek into the Past book should have been out in October...then November...and now it is not expected until much later this year. This was info that was on the Badger books website before Christmas.

Oh ok. He told me he could cope with the word processor but not the computer. He does use his processor, he does the Society newsletter on it.

Having only joined I enter this discussion late!
My gtgtggt grandfather was Robert Taylor.
Haggate House was in Robert Taylors Possession through the census 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881. He died in 1885
In 1841 he was a weaver but as the years went on he bacame a farmer firstly of 18 acres then some 30 acres.
His son John Taylor took over and in one census it has both Robert and son john as Head of Haggate House.
In 1894 Johns daughter Susannah Married a William Banks and in the 1901 census he is head of Haggate House running the farm. So it had been with the Taylors for some years. We dont know how long before 1841 or yet how long after 1901 with Susannah's ofspring

Steven, I will have a look at what I have for another son of Robert Taylor, Thomas Taylor just need to find some more bits I think he was a Stone Mason.
