Taken from "A Lancashire Township. The History of Briercliffe-with-Extwistle". Roger Frost

Mustyhalgh is referred to as early as 1333 when Robert, of Briercliffe, granted a rent of 12d per year for Mustiagh to Gilbert de la Legh who was an ancestor of the Townley’s. The name probably means ‘dampland’.
