Since Norman times one church bell had been rung at 8 o'clock every evening to warn people to damp down their fires in case a spark should set fire to furniture and the wooden framework of their houses.

I wouldn't have thought so Sue.

They used to ring the bell when someone died too but I don't suppose that is still practised either.

There is a case in the UK at the moment where someone has complained about the bell ringing in her village. I think it was Essex. Apparently the bell ringers practice for 3 hours each Sunday afternoon, she lives next door to the church.

The church and its bells have beenthere a lot longer than she has!

Personally, I cannot imagine anything more pleasant than the sound of church bells, as long as it wasn't at 6 a.m.!!
I do remember, when I was having my summer stays at Harle Syke, the sound of St. Peter's bells on Sunday with other churches in the distance pealing away. I loved it! For a city slicker it was a real symbol of rural life....
