At St. Peter's, a day or two before "Rushbearing Sunday" rushes were carried in carts from Mereclough and scattered on the floor of the church: a day or two later, they were swept out by the sexton at a cost of 1s. The custon is probably derived from the very old pracits of covering the earten floor of the old church with rushes and straw which were swept out annually.
