St Swithin’s Day, if it does rain
Full forty days, it will remain
St Swithin’s Day, if it be fair
For forty days, t'will rain no more.


St Swithin, Bishop of Winchester, died on the 2nd July 862. When his remains were later moved to within the Cathedral precincts, against his wishes, on 15 July 971, violent rain started and is said to have lasted for 40 days.
