A medieval form of land tenure in England; a copyhold was a parcel of land granted to a peasant by the lord of the manor in return for agricultural services.

Much property in NE Lancs was copyhold until well into the 20th century (abolished about 1930 I think). The Court Rolls (later Books) of the Honour of Clitheroe record 'surrenders', or transfers. These are at the LRO at Preston. Published however up to c. 1570. There are contemporary indexes. Briercliffe like Burnley, also Little Marsden, was in the Manor of Ightenhill, whereas Colne and Gt Marsden were in the Manor of Colne. Pendle Forest came under Ightenhill, Trawden Forest under Colne. These manors, and others, constituted the Honour of Clitheroe.

I think these may be added to my list for my next visit.

I like it at the LRO.

Thanks Rex. I'll make notes and hope that I can decipher them with the help of the internet!
