Peg-legged.....wobbly legged, I think. Could also be rhyming slang .... My definition of 'pegging up' = Swinging on a swing without being pushed...legs forward...legs back...legs forward...legs back. (I'm a bit visual, folks) |

Rex..perhaps rhyming slang has its very own Lancashire version?? My dad, in a lucid moment yesterday, suggested that peg-legged meant 'a limp'...as in a person with a wooden (peg) leg.... For me the association with 'peggies', is more with teeth...."Look at your lovely little peggies"...to a toddler. Sue |

We called our teeth our peggies, though I'd forgotten about it. We also used the term 'pegging up' on a swing, as you described it, Sue. 'Pegging out' was hanging the washing outside though that maybe in use still. It would be unheard of here. Joan |

Joan..it is now becoming very ecologically 'cool' to peg out in my neck of the woods. People are once again putting up washing lines or buying those umbrella type ones. Energy conscious types...and 'greens'....knickers flapping in the breeze is all the rage!! |

I've aways pegged out my washing and still do. I love the smell of newly washed sheets on the bed, when they have been dried outside. |

Hi Sue, I meant that the phrase 'pegging out' would be unknown here, not the action itself. I've always pegged out washing between about April and November. The other months it freezes hard so I don't bother. I like the smell of the washing when you bring it in, and it isn't chemically induced. The first time in the year that I peg out washing is a sign of spring for me now. A few years ago clothes lines were illegal in my area due to some by-law. I have the umbrella type and always used it it. Now the council is doing all they can to encourage drying washing outside. Joan |

I still peg out my washing when weather permitting, which is'nt so often these days, like you say nothing looks better than a line full of clean clothes billowing in the wind, I have a long line across the garden and use my clothes prop to raise it high. If the weather is bad I dry it on my rack in the garage which is over a radiator, they are dry in no time, I would'nt like to be without my rack, the rack we had when I was a child was in our kitchen, they seem to have come back into fashion again. By rack I mean one of those that are on a pully that sits near to the ceiling, not a unit that fits over the radiator, perhaps the younger members wont remember racks. Stephanie. |

I'm old enough to remember racks, Stephanie, and the maiden around the fireplace. Ironing was my job, I still like it but don't have much to do. After the ironing was finished the clothes were replaced on the rack to air. Joan |
