Another one not necessarily 'local' only.

On another thread I said 'get on my high horse'. Where does it come from?

The noblemen used to ride horses as against the serfs who rode ponies, donkeys or walked. Hence "looking down on someone", or "getting on your high horse", and "speaking down to someone".

Thanks Gloria. I guessed it would be along those lines though wasn't sure exactly.
