This term originates from steelworking areas, fettling is a process of steel production, if I'm not mistaken, one of the final processes to finish off a piece of work and make it good. |

It's also a process in the pottery industry. Mugs/cups etc. are fettled before firing I think but don't quote me. Although I live in the Potteries, I have had nothing to do with the industry. My sister is the only one of my immediate family to have worked in a 'potbonk'. Funnily enough, she was a fettler. She had a funny little knife that she used to scrape the seams from the molds of the handles. |
