Well a teacher used to say to us rather unkindly "Dont just stand there like cheese at fourpence" at the junior school I went to; St Matthews in Padiham up until 1966 when my family emigrated to Australia, I can only assume that "cheese at fourpence" was left on the shelf as no one wanted it; either it was too expensive or had been reduced as it was long past its best, anyone else have any ideas on it ?? |

Oh, thanks! It makes more sense in context. |

It reminds me of another good old saying- I'm standing here like 'piffy on a rockbun' It translates to, might as well not be here or a complete waste of space. Stephanie. |

Local description for the mood I get in after a long days Xmas shopping and a journey home on the bus with someone who is in 'high spirits' of the liquid variety', CRAMMED! |

A lovely word is crammed is it just a local word to us or does everybody know what it means. Stephanie. |

Crammed means packed like sardines in a tin round here. Never heard it used to describe 'high spirits' |

Not 'high spirits', but in a bad mood, fed up, tetchy, etc. |

Yes that's what I meant, 'fed up' etc. How does anybody understand our English??? |

Post subject: | Re: Cheese at fourpence |
Crammed can mean tetchy, bit bad tempered, it can also mean packed like sardines as Mel says. I think of it as tetchy. |

Post subject: | Re: Cheese at fourpence |
Never heard it used a tetchy. Maybe it is a local thing? |
