I have always known 'shebby' as a dialect word for a starling - but wonder if anyone knows any other other local examples of dialect words for living things.

I've thought of another one - throstle for thrush. This word also turns up in censuses in the occupation 'throstle spinner', apparently named from the bird-like sound made by a type of spinning frame (itself known as a 'throstle').
