My grandmother was named Bertha (TINDALL), as good a Victorian name as you can have.

However, the 1871 census was taken one week after she was born, and she is there named Mary. Her parents (Charles and Letitia TINDALL) must have changed their mind before the birth was registered !

Incidentally, my gt-grandmother's mother (Ann HARRISON) was living temporarily with them at the time of the census, no doubt helping out. The family lived in Burnley, whereas she had come all the way from Lincolnshire. She actually outlived her son-in-law Charles, dying aged 95 in 1905, whereas Charles died in 1897 in Burnley.

When my son was born (in the days before drive-through maternity units) the registrar used to call a the maternity home once or twice a week so that mothers could register their babies. One young woman in the home with me declined to register her baby because, although they'd given her a name, they were only 'trying it out for size' to see whether she grew into it.

My sister, who doesn't like her name, reckoned we should all be given a number till we were 21 !!

I'll not embarass her by telling you her name !

Definition of Nightingale is 'Luscinia Megarhynchos'.
So it could be any of the above or laterally thinking;
Lucy, Lucinda, Megan, Marjorie :?:
