But if cousins married, only six !

Does anyone reading this have that situation, I think it was uncommon.

On the same theme, you might not have 16 distinct gt-gt grandparents, if 2nd cousins married ; and so on. There could too be the complication of generation 'slippage', e.g. a second cousin marrying a second cousin 'once-removed'.

In my ancestry I have no known examples of this sort of thing, though one such marrying of not too distant relatives may yet be established.

I have one definite case of cousins marrying and another that I am still trying to find the parents of one spouse to prove they were related prior to marriage.

I have a case in the family tree where one cousin married another. Apparently back then they had to have the blessing of their church. Also this was more commonn as you might think as then families were worried about fortunes going outside the family and therefore choosing who their eldest might marry.
