Thought I was getting the hang of this but, help!!!
I'm trying to tie up loose ends and as I started with my maternal grandfather I'm surprised that I gave up so early with them.
BUT, there may be a clue that I'm missing and someone else may see.
Robert Sumner m. Margaret and had a large family based in Much Hoole.
Born 1823 and appears on the census for 1871 age 48 and 1881 age 58 living in Much Hoole where I assumed they came from.
No record of him on '61 or earlier.
Find my Past have a link for 1861 with a Robert Sumner age 39 but he appears to be in the burnley area????
Anyone with their subs. (unlike me) paid up to date who can check if it's the same man.
He must be on some census somewhere and I had hoped to trace his parents

I notice that he had two Smith step children on the 1871 census aged 12 and 9 which leads me to believe that he must have married Margaret after the 1861 census. The 1861 census has:
Mount Pleasant Cottage, Much Hoole
Robert Sumner , Head, Mar, 38, Hand Loom Cotton Weaver, Much Hoole
Easter Sumner, Wife, Mar. 36. Housekeeper, Bretherton
Daniel Sumner , Son, U, 16, Power Loom Cotton Weaver, Bretherton
Thomas Sumner, Son, U, 9, Scholar, Much Hoole
William Sumner , Son, 5, Scholar, Much Hoole
James Sumner, Son, 2, Much Hoole
Henry Sumner, Son, 10 months, Much Hoole
William, James and Henry are with him and Margaret on the 1871 census.
There is a death for an Esther Sumner aged 38 in the Longton Sub district in 1863 and a marriage for Robert to a Margaret Smith in 1865
15 Oct 1865 St Michael, Hoole, Lancashire, England
Robert Sumner - 43 Weaver Widower of Much Hoole
Margaret Smith - (X), 37 Spinster of Much Hoole
Groom's Father: Thomas Sumner, Weaver
Witness: Thomas Sharples; Elizabeth Smith, (X); Sarah Smith, (X)
Married by: R. Brickel Rector
Notes: [Bride's Father's Name and Occupation not shown]
Register: Marriages 1837 - 1870, Page 74, Entry 147

Thanks so much Mo.
I may be able to move a bit further now I know his father was yet another!! Thomas Sumner.
i did start my family history experience hunting them and as a complete novice you can imagine the tangle I got in.
As my gt. grandfather had moved to Blackburn to look for work, married and moved to Brierfield with his three boys, it should have been easy.
Nooo. I went to Blackburn library , got minimal help and more confused. I had sheets of people with the same surname in the same area and in those days thought I had achieved a lot when I got the 1871 details to match.
Since then I have ,as you especially know, dug ( with help) back to 1700 on three sides and forgotten this lot.
So back to the hunt, maybe I'll find someone really interesting or maybe not.
Thanks for the info.
