Laying The Corner Stone of a New Church

On Saturday last, the corner stone of St. Pauls's Church, Lane Bridge, Burnley, was laid by Colonel the Hon. J.J.Scarlett, supported by the Lord Bishop of Manchester, the Rev. Robert Mosley Master, incumbent of Burnley, and honorary canon of manchester, and the Rev. R.Nicholson, incumbent of St. Paul's Burnley. A procession formed at the Church of England Literary Institution, and proceeded from that to the site of the new building. It consisted of the scholars of St. Peter's, Trinity Church, St. Paul's, and St. James's; together with a number of the friends and members of the church. A band of music was in attendance, and banners and small flags were plentiful in honour of the occasion. Among the clergy, we noticed the Bishop of Manchester, the Rev. R. M. Master, Rev. G. S. Master, Rev. Oswald Master, Rev. T. Wilson, Rev. E. A. Verity, Rev. R. Nicholson, Rev. Hugh Samer, Rev. Jamed O'Connor, Rev. Joseph Bardsley, Rev. D. Sutcliffe, and the Rev. W. Laycocke. We also noticed, at the site of the building, Colonel Scarlett, the Hon. Mrs. Scarlett, and party; Towneley Parker, Esq. Mrs. Master and party, Every Clayton, Esq. John Heelis, Esq. R. Artingdale, Esq. Dr. Sutcliffe, Dr. White, S. Howard, Esq. &c. A hymn being sung, and a prayer read by the Rev. R. M. Master, a silver trowel waspresented to the gallant colonel, who having performed his masonic duties in a very business like manner, attentively watched the depositing of a bottle containing some current coins, and a copy of the Blackburn Standard and Preston Pilot in the place for their reception. The stone was next fixed, and the hon. gentleman addressed the assemblage on the interesting proceedings they had that day witnessed. He was followed by the Bishop of Manchester, who paid a high compliment to the gallant colonel, and to his relative the Rev. W. Thurxby, or Ormerod, who, it appears, gave the land for the building. The trowle bore the following inscription:- "Presented to Colonel the Hon. J. Yorke Scarlett, the prompt and generous supporter of the church and of all good institutions, on laying the foundation stone of St. Paul's Church, Burnley, January 10th, 1852.
