Salem Independent Chapel

We understand that the foundation stone of this chapel will be laid on Good Friday, by Eccles Shorrock, Esq., J.P., of Over Darwen. After the ceremony here will be a tea-party at St. James's National School, which has been kindly lent for the occasion. The masonry work was contracted for on Wednesday evening by Messrs. Crossley, Hitchon, and Co., and the architect, Mr. J.M.Pollard, a native of the town, is a young man of sterling ability, and promises, ere long, to rank high in his profession. The style of architecture if of the composite order, from the Roman, Grecian, and Italian schools. The estimated cost of the projected building, completed - including the purchase of the site - is about £3,500; towards this amount the congregation have already contributed rather more than £900. It will be adapted to hold about 1,200 persons, and, if the architect's designs be fully carried out, will be the most elegant building in Burnley. The entrance is formed in the portico, and over it are two heights of anteas; but the six main anteas are in the elevation. The portico will be of polished ashler stone, and the sides of rustic work, with medallions under the cornice.
