I have copied the following from an e-mail by a member of LFHHS, and with her permission.------

"""For those of you who are aware of the customs of the Baptist faith, please delete this message now - or you will be bored!!

I have only just discovered that people of the Baptist faith do NOT believe in infant baptism. Whilst candidates for baptism (ie Immersion in water) do not have to be adults, they must be old enough to meet the New Testament conditions of repentance from sin and faith in Christ. Sometimes they have to answer certain questions before they can be baptised.

Baptists are part of the Protestant religion, but each Baptist Church or Chapel is autonymous - ie there is no central governing body. Individual congregations simply look to Christ as their Leader. I mention this point because it is likely that different customs and practices may have occurred in the different churches regarding the approved age of baptism.

In a search I have been doing I have discovered that 2 sons of the same family were baptised when they each reached the age of 15. In other churches the norm may be, say, 21.

This will make a huge difference when you are searching for the birth/baptiasm record of an ancestor from this religion. Hence if you have 'lost' someone, it may be worth your while looking up to 20 years later than you estimated, just in case the family were practising Baptists at that time."""

When asking for permission she also gave me the following interesting info---

"""Wikipedia has some info and the BBC website - also individual sites which seem dedicated to the Baptist faith. (nfortunately I cannot remember the names, but if you Google 'Baptist Beliefs' or 'Baptist Faith' or something like that there is some useful information.

There was a baptist chapel at Sabden and some Baptists from Padiham seemed to use it."""

Thanks Gloria.

Haggate didn't appear to have a policy I guess? I have seen baptisms from birth up to and including adulthood
