£60,000 appeal to repair landmark Burnley church

In the early 50's Lanehead school was closed for some work to be done. I am pretty sure St Cuthberts Church Hall was used as the school whilst the work was carried out. It was near a recreation ground in an area behind the General Hospital. The "rec" had a name, but I cannot remember it.

Yes, it is at the end of Townley St overlooking the 'rec' at the lower end of the hospital.

I think we have had a chat about this "rec" somewhere on here before----it has a name :?

Rakehead.

We used to play football on there, just kickabouts, and believe me there was no grass, just cinders. These are still present in my knees.

Appropriately enough, the Hospital cup ties were played there. The final though was at Turf Moor, no cinders there !

 Rakeshead Rec.

The hospital has a bungalow type residence for the disabled, overlooking it, Rakeshead House.

I also had a postcard ( which I passed on to the church) showing a very enthusiastic preacher who came here in about 1900 and attracted such a large crowd , that they conducted what looked more like a political meeting, outside on the rec.

It is also home to the Reedley Allotments Society Show (Barden Lane Allotments) in late August and is worth a visit.

Rakeshead, that's it, thanks Rex. You are right it is/was all cinders.
