Burnley Express Wednesday 23 December 1903 New Baptist Chapel Opened At Nelson On Saturday afternoon the new school-chapel, which has been constructed in Bradshaw-street, Nelson, for the Baptists, as a branch of the Haggate Chapel, was formally opened. The building, the foundation-stones of which were laid on May 23rd last, will seat between two and three hundred people, and has cost £1,500. The opening service, which was well attended, was held inside the chapel. and was conducted by Mr. L. Atkinson, of Burnley, who was one of the gentlemen who laid the foundation-stones. Tea was afterwards partaken of by upwards of 200 persons in the Railway-street Mission-room, and in the evening a public meeting was held in the chapel, over which Mr. D. S. Nuttall, of Nelson, presided. -The Chairman remarked that it was five years since they took hold of the mission in Railway-street, and in that short time they had scarcely expected to have had a building like that they now possessed. He hoped that with better accommodation they would make even better progress, and he extended a welcome to all in the vicinity who did not attend any place of worship to attend Bradshaw-street school and chapel. -Mr. S. Thornton, of Briercliffe, said that as the present was a time for rejoicing it was a most appropriate time to open a new place of worship. None of them had looked forward to that ceremony with as much joy as the Chairman and himself. They had had some anxious times during the past year, but those times were now passed. They meant to be as self-supporting as they had hitherto been. Numerically they were only small, but the cause originally begun in a very humble way at Burwains almost 200 years ago, and from that little congregation had sprung the Haggate, Hill Lane, Carr-road, Woodlands-road, Elizabeth-street, Brierfield, and other churches. -Other addresses were given by Mr. E. Kippax and Mr. J. Greenwood. -Anthems were given at intervals by the choir, solos by Miss Proctor and Mr. W. Burrows, and recitations by Miss Burrows and Miss Hargreaves. The collections duringthe day realised £27 5s. 6d. -On Sunday afternoon Mr. W. PReston, of Burnley, preached, and in the evening Mr. W. Stanworth, Burnley, occupied the pulpit. |
